Psychiatry

Dr. Herbel grew up in small towns in rural North Dakota, where his parents were school teachers.  He attended the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks, where he earned his bachelor's and medical degree.  After completing a four year residency in general psychiatry in Kansas and a two year fellowship at Duke University in North Carolina, he worked for 25 years as a correctional and forensic psychiatrist for the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Butner, North Carolina.  After retiring from government service, he returned to North Dakota and lives in Bismarck, where he opened a part-time psychiatric practice at Mayo Pharmacy several years ago, until he joined the Bella clinic in January 2026.  His area of interest focus on the treatment of anxiety and depressive disorders, as well as spiritual counseling.  His interest in prayer has drawn him into the formation program in Bismarck to become a Secular Carmelite.  He is married to Nellie Edwards, a well-known pro-life artist in the Catholic art world.
